It Wasn't the Driving

Most people who lose a driver's license in the United States did not lose it for dangerous driving. They lost it for owing money. The Legal Aid Justice Center found that more than seven million Americans had a license suspended over unpaid court debt, and the Brennan Center reported that roughly forty percent of suspensions nationally were for unpaid tickets, unpaid child support and drug offenses rather than for unsafe driving.

This is the handbook for getting out of that. It covers all fifty states, and every fee, deadline and program in it was checked against that state's own official source. Where a figure could not be confirmed officially, it is not printed.

It starts where you actually are: not knowing exactly what is holding your license. Chapter two walks you through finding out, hold by hold, because most people have more than one and dealing with them out of order is the difference between six weeks and six months. From there it covers the eight kinds of suspension and how each behaves, what driving while suspended really costs and what to do if you have already been charged, how to get a restricted or hardship license and what makes an application succeed rather than get refused, and how SR-22 filings actually work including the non-owner policy almost nobody is told about.

Chapter eight is the one to read before you pay anything. Several states have repealed debt-based suspensions outright, cleared existing ones and waived the fees, and nobody writes to tell you. It also sets out the five relief mechanisms that exist in many places and are almost never offered unless you ask by name.

The last three chapters are the part most guides skip. Six phone scripts for the calls you have to make, five letter templates you can copy, and four worked examples following real situations from the first phone call to a valid license.
