Nevada Vehicle Title Transfer: A Plain-English Guide for Private Sales

The paperwork is the part that trips people up in a private car sale. Here is the plain-English version for Nevada.

For the seller

• Sign the back of the Nevada Certificate of Title and fill in the sale price and odometer reading
• Provide a current smog/emissions certificate if your county requires one
• Remove your license plates, in Nevada, plates stay with you, not the car
• Cancel or transfer your insurance and keep a copy of the bill of sale

For the buyer

• Get the signed title and a bill of sale at the time of payment
• Have the vehicle smogged if needed, then register at the Nevada DMV within 30 days
• Bring the title, proof of Nevada insurance, the smog certificate and your ID
• Be ready to pay registration fees and the Governmental Services Tax
